Gus Wortham Golf Course gives Houston golfers an eighteen-hole public round in the East End, east of downtown. The course lies along Brays Bayou and is operated by the Houston Golf Association through a partnership with the City of Houston. Its setting combines an urban location with golf that asks players to account for changes in elevation.
Elevated tees and uphill carries are defining parts of the experience. A shot’s measured distance may not tell the whole story, so consider the height of the target and the amount of carry required. Select tees that make those shots comfortable for your usual game. A sensible club choice can keep the round moving without demanding a perfect strike every time.
The layout is relatively open, but several shorter par 4s still require attention. Short does not automatically mean simple. Decide where you want the tee shot to finish, then consider the angle and distance of the approach. A controlled shot to a useful position may create a better scoring opportunity than a longer drive that leaves an awkward next play.
Restoration work has included the course, practice facilities, and clubhouse. The site also offers the Grill at Gus Wortham, giving golfers an option to extend the visit beyond the final putt. Check current hours and access if you plan to practice or eat before or after playing. Those details can vary independently of the tee sheet.
Find Gus Wortham at 7000 Capitol Street in Houston. Use the official Houston Golf Association course page for reservations, rates, and visitor policies. Review booking fees and cancellation terms carefully, especially when reserving well in advance. Confirm cart needs, rental equipment, and any maintenance notices with the golf shop. Arrive early enough to warm up and reach the first tee. Bring water, respect the bayou-side environment, and keep a steady pace while enjoying this distinctive East End golf setting.
